Step One
Your first assignment is to set up your own blog dedicated to the work of this course. Use wordpress.com and choose a title for your blog that suggests something about the blog’s purpose as a space to generate, develop, and present ideas and arguments.
Next, you should draft a short [About] page (about 250 words) that indicates something about your writerly self. You may also wish to include a digital image of yourself, especially one that suggests something about the way you feel about writing.
Step Two
Send me Ethna.D.Lay@hofstra.edu the URL for your blog. I will add it to BLOGROLL on our course blog.
Step Three
Write and publish your first blog post. Begin this way: So, here I am at Hofstra, and I am blogging….. Writing online makes me feel …… Write nonstop for fifteen minutes.
Step Four
In addition to this “Steps for Making Our Blogs” assignment, you will be blogging five formal blogposts of about 250 words. These will be directly related to our reading and class discussion. Oftentimes, you will be pre-writing the blogs at the beginning of our class meetings, but you will be expected to refine them outside of class. You will find the formal blogpost assignments at [Checklist of Blogposts] on the course blog. You will also be posting to your blogs some inclass freewrites, so feel free to bring your laptops to class. Otherwise, you will be responsible for copying them to the blog out of class.
Step Five
Think about blogging (and writing) carefully. This is your invention space. Write and link wildly, copiously, and importantly. We will be reviewing each others’ blogs from time to time, so you should maintain a sense of academic decorum and courtesy.
Remember also these blogs will be public, so you may earn a readership OUTSIDE of this class. Blogging affords writers access to an audience not formerly possible, which carries its own benefits and pitfalls. To this end, you may actively invite readers from anywhere to follow and comment on your blog. Some readers will find you themselves, based on the content of your postings. (If you prefer not to learn in public, please let me know, and I will help you privatize your blog.)
