Let’s see if I can outline what we have planned to complete for our next class meeting.  (If I make a mistake, please do voice your dissent as a COMMENT on this post.)

Inclass today, we commented on four writers’ responses to ch. 2 in Pinker – namely Cecilia, Jess, Sam and Kennedy.  Let’s add comments on the work of Ian, Theresa and Madelyn.  Remember to structure comments by considering about the following questions: (i) what sticks?; (ii) where does the logic break down?; and (iii) I think I might steal .

And everyone should APPROVE the comments received.  (I’ll send mine to you separately via email and/or Blackboard.) . And then, if you are so moved, you can/might/should REVISE your blogpost based on the comments.

Feel free to change the question, but aim to query an abstract notion or abstraction.  Post your two sets of images on your blog.  (You pick how you want to offer them on the blog.) Provide a textual context for everything you post.  It is also advisable for you to record what/who the subject is, the date and place you took the images.  You might want to write a brief reflection of what happened during the taking of these photos.

I can’t wait to see what you do.

Steven Pinker asserts some interesting ideas about what he calls the “classic style” in ch. 2 “A Window onto the World” of his book The Sense of Style: the Thinking Person’s Guide to Writing in the 21st Century.  He pointedly declares what classic style is by sharing what it is not.  What does Pinker reveal about classic style?  What is it, according to him?  What isn’t it?  What oddity does he share about classic style?  (Or does something Pinker suggest strike you as odd?)

After you recall and respond to these questions, think about how this chapter might serve us as we consider the making and the re-mediating of writing into digital forms.  (In other words, suggest a reason why we are reading Pinker for this class.)

Write a 250-word blogpost.  Cite Pinker in your Works Cited (in MLA format); cite any other materials you might choose to reference.
